Core proofs for both partners

Every court-marriage file rests on a few essentials: age proof that clearly shows date of birth, identity proof, current address proof, several recent passport-size photographs and a marital-status declaration. Make sure the name on each document agrees with the others, because the most ordinary files fail on the smallest spelling mismatch.

Papers for special situations

If a partner was married before, attach the final divorce decree or the spouse's death certificate. If a religious ceremony has already taken place and you are registering it, keep the ceremony proof. NRI and foreign-national cases add a passport, visa, overseas address and often a single-status declaration, sometimes apostilled.

Witness documents

Witnesses are part of the legal record. Each generally needs photo ID and address proof, and in many offices must attend in person for the full appointment. Confirm the number of witnesses your chosen office expects, and brief them on what to bring well before the date.

Format and consistency matter

Beyond having the documents, having them in the right format matters — correct photo size, legible copies and consistent details throughout. A file that is complete and internally consistent is what lets the authority approve it on the first proper attempt instead of returning it for corrections.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as valid age proof?

A document clearly showing date of birth — birth certificate, 10th certificate or passport — is usually preferred over Aadhaar alone.

How many witnesses do I need?

It varies by route and office. Confirm the number in advance, and ensure each witness has ID and address proof.

Do NRIs need extra documents?

Often a passport, visa, overseas address and single-status proof, sometimes apostilled, depending on the facts.

What if a document is missing on the day?

It is safer to complete the file first. A missing proof can cause rejection, delay or a repeat visit.
