Why the passport office is strict

When you add a spouse's name to a passport or apply for a spouse visa, the marriage certificate is read closely. The names, the date of marriage and the issuing authority all have to be consistent with your other documents. A certificate that contradicts your passport or Aadhaar — even by a spelling — can hold up the whole application.

Get the names right first

Before you register, reconcile how your name appears on your passport, your Aadhaar and your other IDs. If there is a difference, resolve it through correction or a supporting affidavit, so the certificate is issued in a form that matches your passport file. Fixing this before issuance is far easier than after.

Registration certificate, not just a ceremony paper

Passport and visa offices generally want a registration certificate from the competent registrar, not only a religious or ceremony certificate. If you have only a ceremony certificate, plan the registration step so you hold the document the office actually asks for.

Attestation and apostille for abroad

For use outside India — a spouse visa, immigration or an embassy file — the certificate often needs apostille or consular attestation, depending on the country. Identify this requirement early and complete it before you submit, so a foreign authority does not reject an otherwise valid certificate.
